Course Objective

Examine the positions of dominating political perspectives in the 20th century Turkish political life.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to explain the political movements which emerged in the 20th century in Turkey.
2   Being able to analyse political environment of the transition from Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey.
3   Being able to comment the emergence of political thought in Turkey.
4   Being able to tell the political developments in Turkey chronologically.
5   Being able to tell origins of current political movements.

4 Emergence of Turkish Nationalism as a belated ideology and Turkism
5 Refresh of Political Life in Turkey: Political Developments of 1908-1918 Era.
6 The Kemalist Revolution and fundamental ideological refractions: 1923-1945

8 Wigglings of ideologies in the multi-party system: 1945-1960
9 Increase the effectiveness of Left politics in Turkey: Left of Centre, TIP, Yön Movement
10 Map of socialist and revolutionist movements after 1970
11 Reactional positioning of right politics: AP and its movements after 1960

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The reading list will be given to students at the beginning of the course. The productions that are in the reading list will be discussed and tried to explain in the course. Students will prepare homework (this homework will involve an archival research) about one of these issues and will present it when the time comes. A documentary film about Turkish political history will be watched and discussed at the end of each course.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Two exams will be examined about course knowledges and analysis of them. The events of Turkish political life which are in the documentary film will be included in the scope of course. Students homeworks will be assessed in term of academic rules and presentation quality

Assessment Criteria

The knowledges about political thought and political thinkers and analysis of them will be inspected with examinations.
It will be evaluated general information learned by presentation and homework whether it is used or not for examining chosen facts.
