Course Objective

The primary objective of the course is to learn and provide fair assessments on the political, socio cultural and economic history of Russia and East Europe.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To analyze the historical change and developments of Russians
2   2. To analyze the political-military history of Russian society.
3   3. To understand the relations of Russians with Pechenegs, Cumans and other Turkish communities.
4   4. To analyse the Russian civilization and culture.
5   5. Evaluation importance of the place of Russian society in the history of Turkish and world.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to History of Russia, Early History of Russia Basic concepts and studies about Russian history. Origin of Russians: Slavs
2 The period of Altın Orda Khanate, Grand Duchy of Russians, Pechenegs, Cumans and others. Relations with Turkish communities. Mongolian invasion, Kievan Rus period and other Grand duchies and relations with other societies.
3 III.Ivan and the rise of the Grand Duchy of Moscow The reign of III. Ivan and political history of Grand duchy of Moscow
4 Byzantine and Russians Relations with the Byzantine Empire, Orthodoxy
5 Russian Empire The reign of cruel Ivan and political history of Grand duchy of Moscow
6 The periods of Mad / Great Peter and II. Katerina. The reign of Peter the Great and the formalization of the Russian Empire and II. Ekaterina period.
7 Midterm Exam
8 II. Alexander and Reforms Period II. Alexander ruling years and Reforms.
9 Revolutions of 1905 and 1917 The main reasons for Russian revolution 1905 and 1917, the period, process and results
10 Soviets at Lenin period. The main topics of Soviets at Lenin period.
11 Soviets at Stalin period. The main topics of Soviets at Stalin period.
12 The Cold War and the USSR The developments during the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR
