Course Objective

This process predominantly targets color painting. It discusses color as a tool of expression, canvas as a type of support, and the opportunities of painting; It introduces the subject to the students through compositions about various suggested themes, with help of experiments in painting technique and form.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Evaluation of the physical, physiognomic and psychological effects of color as an independent tool of expression.
2   The options concerning stretcher bars and priming in preparation of a support for painting on canvas. Discussions and applications regarding these technical processes.
3   Experiencing the problems in canvas painting regarding the creation of images through the use of colors over various subjects.
4   The forming of a pictorial language is encouraged with help of experiments concerning the creation of forms.
5   Discussion of the subject with aid of examples of contemporary artworks.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 A Powerpoint presentation concerning the physical, physiognomic and psychological effects of color. Light colors, pigment colors, chromatic and achromatic colors, additive and subtractive color mixing, primary and secondary colors on the color wheel.
2 The three dimensions of pigment colors regarding hue, saturation and value are discussed with the help of a color sphere.
3 Color contrasts; contrasts of various color types, dark-light, cool-warm, complimentary, simultaneous, attribute and weight field contrasts.
4 Evaluation of the subject with a presentation that also contains samples of artworks.
5 Application: Black-white and greyscale studies of various subjects using gouache.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

To start a sustainable dialog with the students through mutual conversations about their works, thus helping the unique individual elements to come out in the works produced. To reinforce the topics by presenting samples of artworks, making reading suggestions and watching movies/videos.
