Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explore cultural and musical aspects of Turkish popular music from the historical perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
2   discuss the matrix of popular culture in the context of Turkish case from the historical perspective, and, recognize the relationship between popular music practices and other aspects of popular culture in Turkey,
3   explain that there is an important relatioship between international popular music forms and Turkish popular music styles,
4   discuss Turkish arabesk with its socio-cultural dinamics and its musical components in detail.
5   explain the orientations and tendencies of Turkish popular music in relation to official and commercial mass media
6   recognize the relationship ideology and music in the context of popular music practices in Turkey (ülkücü (nationalistic), devrimci (revolutionary ) and Islami (islamic) pop.
7   discuss Rap and Metal music in Turkey in the glocal axis

5 The tension between the TRT and the market, and the adventure of Eurovision in Turkey
6 Arabesk in Turkey from the socio-cultural and musical perspective
7 Pop-arabesk, arabesk-pop
8 Tavern in Turkey in the context of space-music
9 The commercial mass media in Turkey
10 Popular music and ideology: `ülkücü' (nationalistic) pop and 'devrimci' (leftist) pop in Turkey
11 Islamic popular music in Turkey
12 Hip-hop culture in Turkey
13 Metal music in Turkey
