Course Objective

In this course students will begin to build larger formal structures in their acoustic compositions, and will learn to exercise a greater control over musical parameters. Students will begin to control structural musical functions with greater surety. Pieces will be written for both the class ensemble as well as outside performers.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will deepen their understandings of the nature of composition in relation to their principal fields of study.
2   Students will gain a granular control over the components of musical textures.
3   Students will learn a broad range of contemporary compositional styles.
4   Students will be able to conceive of original compositional material with assurance.
5   Students will refine their musical notation skills.
6   Students will increase their understanding of what it means to communicate as a composer to to other musicians.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Developing greater control over materials. Working with 5-note collections. Mod-12 math and interval vectors.
2 Vertical maximization of five note collections.
3 Establishing musical relations between prime and transposed/inverted collections.
4 Economy of materials: restricting circulation of the aggregate.
5 Timbre and Klangfarbenmelodien.
6 Form, perception, and exponential functions.
7 Organicism in formal development.
8 In-class performances.
9 Advanced graphic notation.
10 Aleatory. Listening: Lutoslawski and Earle Brown.
11 Present opening gesture of the final composition and analyze its implications in class.
12 Revisiting structural musical functions.
13 Present first half of final project in class.
14 Present complete final projects in class. Critique and revise.
15 Final Performance/presentation of revised projects.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures will consist of listening and analysis of scores, as well as examinations and trials of different compositional techniques.

Assignments will consist of small composition projects written for the class ensemble, as well as one larger final composition project. In addition there will be pitch class set-related assignments for the first seven weeks.
