Course Objective

To give students essential theoretical and applied skills regarding contrapuntal techniques.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define set of rules concerning essential counterpoint technique.
2   Identify, in writing and verbally, triads and their inversions in the context of Major and minor tonalities.
3   Realize note-against-note examples in two voices.
4   Execute two voice examples using syncopation.
5   Apply note-against-note technique in three voices.

In-class lectures are carried out through the counterpoint examples written on the music staff board by the instructor and through varied and individual realizations of students.

Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

Assessment Criteria

EXAMS: Two exams (midterm and final) will be held during and at the end of the semester; a student will earn 100% of his/her grade through these exams. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.
