Course Objective

To give students the ability to realize four-part (SATB) harmony using triads and their inversions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the rudiments of four-part choral writing.
2   Apply the basics of four-part choral realization in writing.
3   Distinguish principal and secondary degrees in major and minor tonalities.
4   Generate a triad in root position on any degree of any tonality and use them in four-part texture.
5   Apply harmonic realization over figured bass.

Lectures
In-class lectures are carried out through the harmonic examples written on the music staff board by the instructor and through varied and individual realizations of students.

Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

EXAMS: Two exams (midterm and final) will be held during and at the end of the semester; a student will earn 100% of his/her grade through these exams. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.
