Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the students a detailed insight into the methods, procedures and techniques required for recording audio, music and designing sound for visual media productions such as video, games, animations etc.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Grasp the theory and practice of recording sound, editing music and sound design for visual materials,
2   Make the connections between sound design concepts and their places in the audio post production process,
3   Apply the theoretical knowledge in practical situations,
4   Incorporate specialized software usage techniques in order to speed up and enhance the post production process,
5   Build the technical relationships between the audio material and the video material, keeping their logical and practical relationships in mind.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be carried out with lectures and real-time applications. The course instructor explains the sound design operations and demonstrates them to the students. All students apply the operations individually in order to familiarize themselves with the procedures. Each week new sound design operations and techniques are shown. Assignment sound design projects will be given. The assignments will be evaluated each week with the class.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

None

Assessment Criteria

Sound Design Projects and Assignments should be delivered on time with the project folder, project contents, 2 channel mix in wave format and a video file in quicktime or avi format.
The assignment CD s and DVD s should all have covers with the student name, number and project title on it.
The students are responsible with the use of the computer lab, recording studio and all the equipment.
Students who wish to practice individually or as a group should inform the course instructor and schedule their practice sessions taking available studio or lab hours into account.
Only students taking this course are allowed to attend courses and practice sessions. No one else other than the attendants of the course should be allowed in the lab or the studio, even if he/she is a student of the music technology department or not.
