Course Objective

1. to conceptualise and practice techniques of scenario writing ( classical method, American method),
2. to explain theoretically and technically concepts of scenario, treatment, synopsis, detailed film story writing,
3. to be aware of differences between scene, plan, sequence,
4. to recognize theoretically the concepts of dramatic structure, character analysis, event pattern, dialogue pattern,
5. to adopt main knowledge on scenario writing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   . Learn and practice the American and classical method in scenario writing,
2   Learn and practice scenario, synopsis, treatment, detailed film story writing technically and theoretically,
3   Learn and practice technically and theoretically the concepts of scene, plan, sequence,
4   Learn and be able to evaluate in practice the concepts of dramatic structure, character construction , event pattern and dialogue pattern,
5   Learn basic information related to scenario and be able to evaluate it in practice,

1 What is a 'story' The difference between literal and filmic story
2 What is film story, synopsis Comparison through theoretical information and samples
3 What is treatment, scenario writing Comparison through technical methods and film samples
4 Comparison and evaluation on theoretical and practical differences of scene, plan and sequence.
5 Analysis of dramatic structure theoretically, supporting with literal and filmic samples and their comparison
6 Theoretical analysis of dramatic structure
7 Theoretical analysis of character construction
8 Theoretical analysis of character construction (continue) - Back up with samples
9 Treating scenario structure of a short film
10 Review of scenario structure of a feature film
11 Review of scenario structure of a feature film (continue)
12 Review and evaluation of scenarios written and filmed
13 Review and evaluation of scenarios written and filmed
14 Evaluation of homeworks (continue), general conclusion

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course includes to show technical and theoretical concepts related to structure of scenario by PowerPoint presentations, to discuss with question/answer method and to make theoretical analyses via film samples. The information acquired is strengthened by little practical works and a homework topic.
