Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the historical development, the terminological definitions such as binding, binder etc., the features of classical Turkish binding, their types and usages in designs of Turkish Binding Art.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   have competence about the historical development of Turkish Binding Art,
2   know the features and samples of the first binding in Islam world,
3   know the classical Turkish Binding types such as leather, cardboard, lace, marbling, bejewelled,
4   have a good command of the methods to examine and research the private collections or the written work collections in museums or libraries,
5   make an original binding design in accordance with the academic knowledge they have gained in educational period and visual sources.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The students are expected to determine binding samples of different periods in various libraries and museums after being instructed about related main sources. They will be asked to make a presentation so as to have a good command of research methods, and to make a comparison and interpret on the knowledge they have gained. They will also realize a print of an original design on a sketch paper by making use of the homework bindings.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

That the students learn the binding samples in various museums and libraries and definitions about them will be of the importance to evaluate the lesson. Besides, the students creativity and originality in original design which has been realized after academic researches will be considered.

Assessment Criteria

Mid-term exam, final exam, presentation and project will be evaluated out of 100 and the average will be assessed out of 100. 80 % attendance is compulsory.

Course Policies and Rules

After the theoretical knowledge will be given both orally and written, the practices will be made one-to-one with the students. The students are informed about the next lesson s subject and are expected to make a pre-study about it.
