Course Objective

In this course it is aimed to prepare students for their subsequent learning in environmental education by making them to gain knowledge and skills about evaluating the environmental education approaches from 1900s to present day, basic knowledge and application for a better environmental education, contemporary approaches and a constructivist environmental education.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gain knowledge about the history of environmental education,
2   Recognize different dominant approaches during different time periods,
3   Learn common approaches in an effective environmental education,
4   Define constructivist approaches in environmental education,
5   Design and apply a course according to 5E learning cycle.

2 Overview of environmental education from 1900s to 1960s
3 Environmental education approaches after 1960s
4 Contemporary approaches in environmental education
5 Examination of human effects to environment and its causes
6 Examination of science teaching and science curriculum for overcoming these effects
7 What kind of environmental education; separated or integrated
8 Midterm exam
9 Integration of environmental education into science education
10 Characteristics of a curriculum that can inform students about human effects on environment and how can it be applied
11 Examining the transfer of environmental knowledge according to students development levels
12 Constructivism and environmental education
13 Conceptual understanding in the literature and misconceptions in environmental education
14 A course plan designed according to 5E approach and its application
15 Final Exam
