Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to focus on the role of the European Union in the international trade system, with particular reference to EU trade policies and regimes at both multilateral and bilateral contexts. For this purpose, new configurations of power in a globalized economic system; the pattern of EU s global activity; the guiding principles of EU Trade Policy and its links to other EU policies; EU s multilateral and bilateral trade agreements; the new dynamics after the Lisbon Treaty will be analysed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have sufficient knowledge on the role of EU in international trade sysem, both at multilateral and bilateral contexts.
2   have sufficient knowledge on the EU s external trade policies and its changing dynamics, especially after the Lisbon Treaty.
3   demonstrate sufficient knowledge on the major points of dispute in the globalized trade system.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will be fully prepared to discuss reading assignments and cases.
2. The learner will clearly describe the nature and scope of he European Union with particular reference to its role in international trade system.
3. The learner will demonstrate sufficient knowledge on EU s participation in multilateral trade schemes as well as its bilateral trade relations.
4. The learner will be able to evaluate policy alternatives of the EU with respect to the key problems arising from globalisation; rules and norms governing economic, trade and migration aspects of globalisation and finally assess the role of the Europeanisation process in the globalisation process. This will give the learner an opportunity to reflect on these two processes and how they interact with each other.

3. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise will not be accepted.
