Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of contemporary business and the economic fundamentals of
operating a business.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate understanding of the structure and dynamics of business environments; how business seek to track and analyze their environments.
2   Be aware of the primary issues in legal, regulatory, social responsibility, ethical and global business matters.
3   Know the different forms of business organizations, the significance of small business and the challenges facing the entrepreneurial business owner.
4   Learn how the business plan is a foundational tool for developing and managing a successful business.
5   Demonstrate understanding of the financing of the business and the other enterprises, including sources, uses and management of finance, use accounting for managerial and financial reporting purposes.
6   Describe the nature of markets and customers, processes and institutions in the production and marketing of goods and/or services and the management of the resources and operations
7   Demonstrate understanding of the functioning and role of human resource functions and its relevance to managers and employees in work organizations.
8   Demonstrate understanding of the management of technology in the business that would help improve the effectiveness of the business
9   Describe the nature and structure of management information flow in the businesses

Assessment Criteria

1. Students will describe the private enterprise system and the roles played by individual businesses,
competitors, and entrepreneurs within the system, and how technology is changing the way businesses
operate and compete.
2. They will explain how ethics and social responsibility affect business decision making.
3. They will explain different types of market structures in a private enterprise system.
4. Students will distinguish between a global business strategy and multi-domestic business strategy.
5. They will discuss the basic forms of business ownership & the advantages & disadvantages of each form.
6. Students will describe the strategic planning process and related steps.
