Course Objective

This course examines the history and political developments of Central Asian and Caucasian states since 1991.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the political, economic, cultural and ideological problems of reconstruction, and the policies of regional actors in the post-Soviet Central Asia and Caucasus.
2   To identify and explain the specific as well as general problems underlying the current conflicts in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
3   To be able to identify and critically assess possible solutions to regional conflicts.
4   To acquire the necessary skills to conduct research for an oral presentation.
5   To acquire presentation skills to present his/her research.

Assessment Criteria

1. Learners will compare and contrast the political, economic, cultural and ideological problems of reconstruction in the post-Soviet Central Asia and Caucasus, along with the policies developed by regional actors.
2. Learners will explain major conflicts in the region after 1991 and evaluate the conflict resolution practices.
3. Individual research conducted by the learners will cover theoretical insights and historical background about the selected case.
