Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce the learners to the concept of democracy, democratization and democratic consolidation and the factors that have an impact on democratic consolidation. It will also concentrate on embedded and defective democracies by including the concepts of illiberal democracy, delegative democracy, competitive authoritarianism as well as hybrid democracies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gain an understanding of the concepts of democracy, democratization and democratic consolidation.
2   Identify and gain an understanding of the process the democratizing countries have been going through.
3   Comprehend the factors (political institutions, civil society, economic development, civil-military relations, international actors) that have an impact on democratic consolidation.
4   Design and write a research paper in order to analyze a specific factor that promotes or hinders the democratic consolidation of a country.
5   Work effectively indivually or as a member of a team.
6   Demonstrate analytical skills in writing a report..
7   Demonstrate communication skills in presenting the paper.
8   Acquire the skills to use library and internet resources.

Assessment Criteria

1. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of democracy, democratization and democratic consolidation.
2. Evaluate the reasons why some countries can consolidate their democracies while the others cannot.
3. Work individually or as a group in analyzing the factors that promote/hinder democratic consolidation of a country.
4. Demonstrate high analytical and communication skills in writing and in presenting a report.
5. Acquire skills to use library and internet resources independently.
