Course Objective

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with major trends, actors and events in the political life of Europe in the 20th century both on a continent-wide and country-by-country basis. Turning points in domestic politics of France, Britain, Germany (later East and West), Soviet Union, Spain etc. will be discussed, as well as common social and cultural trends.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify the main actors and events of European history between 1914 and 2000 in order to comprehend the development of the international system in the 20th century
2   Identify major economic, cultural and social transformations in 20th cc Europe and their connections with political transformations
3   Develop a historical and critical viewpoint in analyzing contemporary political trends
4   Develop academic writing skills
5   Develop academic presentation skills

Assessment Criteria

Each student will be able to explain the major events, actors, currents, trends and transformations in 20th century Europe.
Each student, in group or individually, will be assigned an additional historical document or question to be answered, and expected to present it in class.
Each student will read a literary work of the 20th cc, which he/she will select from a list provided by the lecturer, and write a 4-5 page report on the book. Reports are expected to contextualize the main points of the book within the themes of the course.

1. Attending at least 70 % of lectures is mandatory.
2. Students should come to class on time or they will miss the roll call and will be marked absent for that class.
3. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
4. Students should complete course readings before the class for which they are assigned.
