Course Objective

Migration has become a salient issue in international relations. Although cross-border population movements have a long history, the magnitude and repercussions of international migration have become more significant due to the process of globalization in the post Second World War era. This course aims to offer students a general view in this field, by focusing on various aspects of international migration and its politics, at the international level and state level.
The course begins by a closer look at the concept and significance of borders in relation to migration. After the description of the main concepts and types of international migration, the course proceeds to the subject of migration policy. Migration policy is explained through the involvement and role of various actors at the national and international levels. With respect to the degree of openness and the security - rights nexus, the determinants of migration policy are evaluated in terms of its economic, political and cultural impacts on societies.
Following a summary of trends and the contemporary agenda in the political debate on international migration, the course focuses on some current issues in the politics of migration, such as asylum, illegal migration and border control, anti-immigrant attitudes, immigrant incorporation and transnational communities.
