Course Objective

To be able to use and evaluate the primary sources maintained in the Ottoman archives and the written texts in the Ottoman languages in the economic analysis.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to use the fundamental qualifications of the Ottoman diplomatica and archive sources
2   To be able to reach the sources related with the Ottoman economic history and to be able classify and evaluate these sources
3   To be able to read the written sources and texts written in the Ottoman period of Turkish History
4   To be able to do academic researches using the primary sources of economic history
5   To be able to comprehend the relation between the historiography and the analysis done by using the primary sources

1 Introduction of the letters in the Ottoman Turkish
2 Introduction of the font types used in the Ottoman Turkish
3 The rules related with the spelling and the reading of the letters in the Ottoman Turkish
4 The bureaucratic functioning of the official correspondences in the Ottoman Empire
5 Introduction of the written and printed sources in the Ottoman and in the foundation period of the Turkish Republic.
6 Introduction to the sources written in Ottoman Turkish
7 Reading of the written sources in Ottoman Turkish
8 Reading of the written sources in Ottoman Turkish
9 Introduction of the Rika font and rules of Rika
10 Introduction to the reading of the sources written in Rika font
11 Reading of the sources written in Rika font
12 Reading of the sources written in Rika font
13 Reading of the sources written in Rika font
14 Reading of the sources written in Rika font

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Participation to the course is obligatory. The course is tought man to man. Weekly home works related with textual analysis will be given according to the level of the class.
