Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to examine migration in Europe; globalisation of migration; the concepts of assimilation, integration and acculturation within a theoretical and methodological framework. For this purpose, Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands will be analysed as case studies and the current situation of the migration policies in these countries will be discussed by taking into consideration of their economic, social and cultural impacts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To discuss migration in integrated Europe, globalisation and assimilation with its social, cultural and economic dimensions
2   To evaluate and interpret the different dimensions and formations of migration in the EU level
3   To analyse the impacts of multiculturalism and cultural dialog in Europe on EU integration process
4   To analyse and compare the migration policies in the countries of immigration in Europe
5   To evaluate the current discussions on EU migration issues

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will be fully prepared to discuss reading assignments and cases.
2. The learner will clearly describe the concepts of assimilation, integration and acculturation.
3. The learner will demonstrate sufficient knowledge on migration in Europe.
4. The learner will present the analysis of selected countries, with particular reference to the relevant migration policies of these countries.

1. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
2. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
3. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise will not be accepted.
