Course Objective

The main objective of this course is to examine in-depth the changing and postmodern theories with the key organizational concepts and phenomenon considering the new directions in organizational and management theories. The course deals with the new directions and strategic issues in this respect.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the main concepts and elements of organizational theory.
2   To be able to question the reasons of interdisciplinary interaction of organizational theory.
3   To be able to define the needs in order to propose different views and develop skills and competencies regarding the existing theories in the literature.
4   To be able to reach the information that the student needs and seeks for.
5   To be able to design, develop, implement a method in order to solve a problem within the framework of a scientific research and evaluate its results.

1 The main philosophy of management and organizational studies and insight into concept and theory
2 The view towards organizations, the priority of science, field, discipline and theory: Does scientific view compromise with instrumentalism
3 The birth and evolution of the field of organizational researches.
4 The main dynamics of classical and modern approaches in organizational theory and comparison.
5 General system theory and its link with organization design.
6 Contingency theory-Situational approach.
7 Three economic based approaches in organizational theory: (Transaction Cost theory, Agency Theory and Resource Dependancy Theory)
8 Three economic based approaches in organizational theory: (Transaction Cost Theory, Agency Theory and Resource Dependancy Theory) (The midterm exam will be made in this week apart from the lecture.)
9 Organizational Ecology; the paradox of Fit-Selection and co-evolution as an antithesis.
10 Organizational Ecology; the paradox of Fit-Selection and co-evolution as an antithesis.
11 Institutional theories and Macro Institutional Theory .
12 Chaos and Complexity in organizational theory .
13 Organizational networking.
14 Organizations from the viewpoint of Critical theory .

Assessment Criteria

Students are assessed based on midterm, final exams, participation to class discussions and the presentation of their term assighment. (please see below the course policies and rules). Students will have an understanding regarding recent and historical management and organizational theories. Students are expected to organize academic studies and they should have a detailed comprehension on them.

The instructions for the midterm and final exam are as follows: The questions are not general but specific. The responses should be made considering the right use of terminology. The degree of use of terminology in the right and appropriate manner. The consistency of cause-effect relationships among the concepts.Students should indicate the reason of the proposed views or solution scientifically, rationally and logically and should convince the lecturer for this.The degree of competency in readings and issues regarding the course. Participation to class discussions.
