Course Objective

The importance of the experience which the Constitutional Era gave will be better understood when it is noted that Tarık Zafer Tunaya defined 2nd Contitutional Era as a laboratory of the republic. This period is accepted as the beginning of the passage to the national state as well as the last stop of the Ottoman modernization. The fact that it can be understood from the effect to the revolution period of those which the staff of the Republic earnt from the experince of the constitutional monarchy may be possible with an investigation of political, cultural and socio-economic experience of the constituational era. To know therefore features and problems of the constitutional era will facilitate to understand The Republic. The Constitutional Monarchy which is one of the most important stages of the Turkish political life caused to develope democracy, freedoms and parliamentary life. Beside these contributions effects of problems caused by the search for identity and ideology in this period on internal and external developments will be understood by examining the period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   explain role and importance of the constitutional era on the Turkish political history
2   interpret political, social and economic conditions which prepared the proclamation of the Constitution
3   examine development of political organizations and political thought during the Ottoman modernization
4   analyze the accumulation of political conflicts and discussions provided by the Constitutional period
5   to evaluate continuity/departure process between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey with presentations
