Course Objective

To recognize Classical Arabic literature and know the types of the classical period, and can read the texts about these genres.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student knows the literature of Classical Arabic literature
2   The student recognizes types of Classical Arabic Literature and knows outstanding works
3   The student gets information about styles of the texts on Classical Arabic literature
4   The student gets information about contents of the texts on Classical Arabic Literature
5   The student can translate the texts of the Classical Arabic literature

5 Islam and poetry, types of poetry in Islamic period
6 The subject of the poems, shapes and styles in Islamic period
7 Selected poems from Ka'b b. Zuheyr
8 Prose in Islamic period: the effect of the Qur'an and the Hadith in Arabic language and literature
9 Types of Prose: Khitabah, Kitabah, Wasiyyah, Tavkî ât, Hikmah
10 The letters and last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
11 The letters of al-Khulafa al-Râşidin and selected texts from Nahc al-Balâğah
12 Poetry in Umayyad period
13 Examples from Umayyad period poetry

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Midterm and Final Exam:
In Mid-term and final exam, the students are asked questions in classical style about works and books on Classical Arabic literature, which will test their knowledge of the field. They are also asked to perform translation of the Classical Arabic literature texts to Turkish Language .

Homework:
The student prepares a composition about a certain genre, literary movement, or a book or an author, and then presents this composition in printed output.

Assessment Criteria

The students will be assessed based on success in their mid-term, and final exams and assignments along with their performance during the classes throughout the semester.
