Course Objective

The aim of the course is to understand ideologies shaping/framing Turkish political life within the background of the rise and evolution of modern ideologies and political movements. Specific emphasis will be devoted to the writings of major representatives. Enlightenment thought, liberalism, conservatism, Marxism, social democracy, nationalism, and feminism are amongst the main topics that are to be dealt in this course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Acquire advanced knowledge in ideas and ideologies shaping Turkish political life within the historical background of political developments in the 19th and 20th centuries
2   Evaluate critically key ideas and basic ideologies affecting political thought in Turkey
3   Compare and contrast different approaches to political issues in order to identify the contested nature of political science concepts
4   Identify the social, political and intellectual context in which ideologies emerged in order to comprehend the interrelation of political concepts (theory) and everyday political life (practice)
5   Explain the impact of certain thinkers on others and their intellectual legacy

Assessment Criteria

The students
1. Write clear and coherent explanations of the ideologies and thinkers.
2. Compare and contrast different ideologies and thinkers with regard to certain common
criteria.
3. will write a research paper and scholarly develop an argument regarding an issue of their own interest related with ideologies affecting political thought in Turkey.

1. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
2. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
3. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise they will not be accepted.
