Course Objective

The aim of this course is to give students valuable insight into evolutionary economics which deals with the study of processes that transform the economic system and the structure for firms, industries, institutions, production and trade patterns, economic growth using evolutionary methodology, through the actions of economic agents who constantly evolve through experience and interactions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the concepts of evolutionary economics in order to examine industrial and organizational evolution processes.
2   Develop an understanding of sustainable economic development through a combination of the elements of evolutionary ecological and evolutionary economical systems.
3   Gain insight into evolutionary approaches regarding explanation of historical processes in the economy.
4   Be able to apply the relevant theoretical perspectives for reconsiderations of current microeconomics and macroeconomics in view of evolutionary economics.
5   Prepare a research paper on a relevant topic.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will clearly define the key concepts of the area of evolutionary economics.
2. The learner will explain the structural transformations economic systems have gone through, through the use of evolutionary methodology.
3. The learner will define the spatial evolution of industries, convergence/divergence and innovation systems.
4. The learner will have developed an evolutionary perspective that explains the economic phenomena not only through optimization problems but also through chronical evolution processes of economic agents.
