Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to investigate the role of culture on the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of psychological disorders. Furthermore, different cross cultural perspectives on mental disorders, culture bound syndromes, and the changes in understanding of mental disorders through history will be explored in this course. In addition, psychological health and adjustment of minority groups (immigrants, refugees, ethnic and cultural minorities, and etc.) will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define cultural and cross-cultural psychology.
2   Recognize about cross cultural variations
3   Investigate ethnocentric thinking, thinking biases and stereotypes.
4   Recognize culture specific psychopathologies
5   Apply methodology of cross cultural psychology research.
6   Identify the factors related to the mental health of special groups such as refugees and immigrants
