Course Objective

This course aims to study historical development of oriental studies in Europe. Oriental studies are mostly confused with the political and religious concept of orientalism as it was expressed to define the static and undeveloped feature of the East in respect to the West's superiority. It often refers to Midlle East, Asia and Islam but the primitive origine of the East goes bact to the early narrations of Greeks and Romans on Egyptiasns, Assyriand and Persians. The exotic and misterious world of the East are treated in litterature and depicted in art but oriental studies have an important role in archaeology, linguistics and philosophy. During the course the latters will be treated.
