Course Objective

The aim of the course is to try to analyze origin and development of nation and nationalism, effects of these new ideologies in Balkans, dissolution of main social structure in the Ottomans and particularities of Balkan nationalism, their confrontation, role of external factors on nationalism of Balkans, influences of Balkan nantionalism on the Ottomans and its contributions to the Turkish nationalism. Moreover it aim to study putting Balkans back on the world agenda during the globalization progress after the Cold War, crises lived and reasons of tragedies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   know main literature on Balkans and Nationalism
2   list theories of nationalism and defenders of these theories
3   study history, culture and geography of Balkans
4   analyze relationship between nation-state and nationalism
5   evaluate progress of ideology of nationalism and its effets
6   do presentations in accordance with comparative methodology
