Course Objective

To research and discuss the gender judgements produced in social grounds and solidify in social subconscious.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand gender definitions and fixed gender judgements.
2   Search for the examples of fixed gender judgements on written pieces - especially in the pieces for performing arts- and examine the findings with respect to historical and social grounds.
3   Examine these finding with todays world and create an idea about the fixed gender judgements in common subconscious of the society.
4   To question the fixed gender judgements via written pieces and make them visible.
5   To express the outcome of these researches using critical writing techniques.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction: The relation between gender, fixed gender judgements and art.
2 Art and gender from perspectives of the objects, the producer and the consumer of art. Fixed gender judgements and art in collective sobconscious of the socitey.
3 Feminist critical writings on art and feminist criticism. Why there is no great, genious woman artist L. Nochlin, P. Mathews, N. Salomons approach.
4 DISCUSSIONS ON THE TOPICS OF HOMEWORKS AND PRESENTATIONS
5 The examples about the duality of woman (godness and badness) in written art works.
6 Woman as an example of the defectiveness of Turkish Modernisation in Turkish Theatre. From Pandora to Ayla, from mythology to Cevat Fehmi Baskurt.
7 The discussion on gender equality by focusing to the relation between woman and work life from the point of modenity and conservatism. The subject play is Kadin Erkeklesince of Huseyin Rahmi Gurpinar.
8 Women and woman writers of Turkish Modernization. Fatma Aliye ve Nezihe Muhittin
9 The relation between woman and sin. Woman, death and sin in Puccinis Operas.
10 Mother as partiarchally approved woman. Motherhood, chieldless woman and working mother examples from Turkish theatre.
11 The necessity of a new alphabet on gender inequality: The examples from woman and man writers.
