Course Objective

In a vast territory extending from the west coast of Europe to the Asian steppes and to the eastern shore of the Indian sub-continent, and the first span of many faith systems, consecrated settlements which from ancient world to the modern world religious thoughts integrated into topography, has occurred. The basic purposes of the course are to examine the historical routes to the main center of attraction, Middle East, and to introduce major pilgrimage sites of the routes in terms of religious character, architectural form and texture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the historical relationship between the temple buildings and settlements.
2   To recognize the historical character of religious pilgrimage routes and paths.
3   To identify the major cities with pilgrimage sites.
4   To have an idea about the historical city texture of the holy settlements, and to classify the religious building of them in terms of architectural form and function.
5   To have knowledge about the historical and social significance of the pilgrimage routes and understanding the importance of the routes aspect of faith tourism.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Historical and conceptual framework: basic terminology related to the history of art and architecture.
2 Ancient Settlements: Central Asia
3 Ancient Settlements: Indus Valley.
4 Ancient Settlements: Mesopotamia.
5 Polytheism to monotheism: the Prophet Abraham's route (Harran, Aleppo, Damascus, Jerusalem).
6 St. Paul routes (1-2): Antioch, Samandağ, Cyprus, Antalya, Perge, Yalvaç, Konya / Jerusalem, Antioch, Tarsus, Çanakkale, Macedonia.
7 St. Paul routes (3-4): Antioch, Tarsus, Konya Ephesus, Istanbul, Athens / Jerusalem, Antioch, Tarsus, Datca, Maltese Islands, Rome.
8 Muslim holy city of Mecca and Medina.
9 The main pilgrimage routes in the Islamic world: from West to Hijaz (Cordoba, Qayrawan, Fustat).
10 Balkans to the Hijaz: Istanbul, Bursa, Konya, Aleppo, Damascus.
11 Central Asia to the Hijaz: Bukhara, Samarqand, Nishapur, Isfahan, Najaf, Baghdad.
12 Indian sub-continent to Hijaz: Fatehpur Sikri, Gwalior, Delhi, Surat, Sirhind, Sind.
13 General Review: Historical and cultural value of pilgrimage shrines and routes in terms of faith tourism.
