Course Objective

The course will provide a general overview on the energy bands in solids, fundamental characteristics of semiconductor crystals, dielectric and optical properties of solids, based on the principles of classical and quantum physics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to explain the physical properties of solids in terms of their band structure.
2   Being able to identify the basic features of semiconductors and their importance in technology.
3   Being able to elucidate the relation between the electronic structure and optical behavior of a solid.
4   Being able to clarify the mechanisms comprising the physical properties of materials by using simple models.
5   Being able to convey the knowledge on solids to suggest a solution for a daily life issues.
