General Description

Dokuz Eylul University undertaking the mission of "increasing the economic, cultural and social prosperity of humanity via education and scientific research" has dedicated itself to the goal of being "one of the best global centers of science and education". Dokuz Eylul University, already one of the most reputable universities in Turkey, boasts a high standard of quality and contemporary education resources. DEU holds its faith in the Turkish Republic as a democratic, secular state led by the disciplines and resolutions of Ataturk, and thus, has achieved an exclusive position among universities by means of its success in education together with high human and social values.
DEU was founded on the 20th of July 1982 by “Higher Education Institutes Foundation Law No: 41” as the second state university in İzmir, subsequent to Ege University. Dokuz Eylul University started with a total of 24 facilities, which were acquired from Ege University, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Dokuz Eylül University has gone through an intense growth process over the years. 63.561 students were enrolled at DEU within the 2013-2014 academic year and this number is expected to reach 67.000 students by the first semester of 2014-2015. With its diverse opportunities, DEU also accommodated 1019 international students in the academic year of 2013-2014.

Our university now has 13 faculties, 10 institutes, 1 conservatory, 3 graduate schools, 1 School of Foreign Languages providing foreign language education, 6 vocational schools and 49 research centers, making a total of 83 education institutions, together with 3129 academic staff - 616 professors, 296 associate professors, 568 assistant professors, 955 research assistants, 357 lecturers, 153 specialists and 184 instructors - and 3357 administrative staff.
Dokuz Eylül University functions as an urban university with its campuses located in several districts of İzmir. These campuses cover 5 731 800 square meter (670 573 sqm) based in Alsancak, Balçova, Narlıdere, Buca (Center– Dokuzçeşmeler – Tınaztepe) Hatay, Torbalı, İnciraltı, Urla, Seferihisar, Ürkmez, Foça, and Karşıyaka.

Dokuz Eylul University has one of the best hospitals in Turkey, even in the world, with qualified academic staff, advanced buildings and technical equipment, plus a history of educational success. Our university has established a world class R&D Center in line with the top priority (scientific research) in its strategic plan. Construction of the administrative building of the accredited Advanced Biomedical Research Center, which aims to produce “high value, patentable, applicable medical outcomes” in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, has been completed to a great extent. The R&D center where the activities such as “cellular treatments”, “cancer biology” and “the molecular biology of genetic disorders” will be conducted has contributed highly to Turkish scientific research.

The DEU Research and Application Hospital has 23 operating rooms with the latest technology in devices and equipment, an emergency room, and an infant emergency room. It has the capacity to serve 24 hrs with its1024 beds (10 in emergency, 94 in intensive care, 897 in clinics) across all medical centers. The hospital has played a successful and prominent role in organ transplants in the Aegean Region. The IVF Center and Sleeping Disorders Center are also remarkable features.

Dokuz Eylul University has joined the Erasmus Exchange Program and so far has signed 282 bilateral agreements with 218 universities. In total, 920 outgoing students and 411 incoming students have participated in the program at DEU. Dokuz Eylul University has been participating in the national student exchange program, Farabi, since the 2012-2013 academic year and has signed protocols with 58 universities within this framework.

Our university offers double major and minor programs in some education programs in the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Letters and minor programs in some departments of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Business in accordance with the Double Major Program Directive and the Minor Program Directive.

The Dokuz Eylul University Distant Learning Research and Application Center conducts distant learning opportunities on the internet (deuzem.deu.edu.tr) for students who prefer courses independent from time and location constraints. ILTAM (The Theological Degree Completion) program has provided learning opportunities to 300 students from several locations in Turkey.

The Academic Member Training Program (Öğretim Üyesi Yetiştirme Programı), is a program that trains academic and teaching staff for universities in need of academic personnel. The research assistants of these universities do their postgraduate studies in other universities that can offer postgraduate education in coordination with the Council of Higher Education. Our university is distinguished in the OYP program. 218 research assistants in this program have been enrolled as postgraduate students at our university and started their studies in the 2013-2014 academic year.

The university library consists of a central library and 12 libraries connected to the central library. The university library has a total area of 20,127 m² and the capacity for 2,948 readers.

All information systems in the Rectorate are managed by the Data Processing Agency. Personnel Affairs (services such as appointments, promotions, assignments, off days, passport and patient transfer procedures), Registrar’s Office (services such as online registration , semester registration, grade monitoring), Faculty Members Grade Submission, Pre-registration procedures, Medico Student Health Services, constructional work, BAP purchasing, additional course procedures, and monitoring Academic CV Data and many other procedures are done via the Automation (Oracle) Operating System, which was brought online in December 2004 and is still used in cooperation with the Rectorate and related facilities. Furthermore, Our University’s Library and Documentation Services Board maintains Library and Documentation Automation that provides an Internet access to database and electronic journals. Our campuses are connected to the center in the Rectorate with the speed varying between 2MBPS and 34 MBPS. This center, with its total 155 MBPS of infrastructure, is connected to the TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM inter-university academic web and internet.

While providing our academic staff with portal-quality service via DEBIS (a product of our data-processing unit) there is an overall automation program underway to allow DEU to become an e-university. As well as endeavoring to make DEBIS available for the use of students, every student is granted a free e-mail account, and a dial-up Internet service is offered to students who have access to computers at home.

The Doğanbey/ Payamlı Recreational Facilities serve the students and the academic staff of the university as well as the staff from other public institutions and the staff of other universities along with their students. It has 24 rooms in each block. It has a total number of 144 beds and it can serve 216 people altogether with additional beds if necessary. The Facility has double rooms with AC and 24 hr hot water. The Facility also provides recreation with its internet cafe, cafe, club, and amphitheater. Sports for student leisure time - volleyball, basketball and 5-aside football - are catered for, and the facility also hosts all kinds of social activities such as; sports tournaments, theatre and conferences on current issues.
