General Description

History

Higher Economy and Trade School, on which contemporary Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences was founded upon, was established on September 9th, 1944. It was renamed as Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy on June 8th, 1959 by the by the Law No. 7334. It was included in Ege University as a faculty in 1968. With the establishment of Dokuz Eylül University by Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, it was joined the establishment as Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Contemporarily, the Faculty consists of seven departments which are Business Administration, Economics, Public Finance, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Public Administration, Econometrics and Management Information Systems. All departments have both day and evening formal education programmes.
Department of Econometrics carries education and research activities on topics to analyze problems about economics and business administration using statistics and operations research, and to provide optimum decisions.

Qualification Awarded

The graduates, who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum of Econometrics Programme, are awarded with the Bachelors Degree in Econometrics.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of prior learning for Econometrics Programme are in conformance with general requirements of Dokuz Eylül University. These rules and regulations can be accessed through web page http://www.deu.edu.tr/ders-katalog/eng/eng-b7.html.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students are required to successfully complete all courses of the programme (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) and obtain a minimum average grade point of 2.00 out of 4.00. In addition, conditions in the relevant articles of the second and fourth parts of the Associate and Bachelors Degree Education and Examination Regulations (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) should be met.

Profile of the Programme

The Undergraduate Programme of Econometrics aims to increase the research and problem solving ability by training them on statistics, econometrics and operations research areas according to the emerging world and country conditions. The main objective of this program is to provide students the knowledge to do research on economic and social phenomena and the ability to analyze and solve problems which can arise from the needs of both public and private sectors. The program also provides the opportunity to specialize in fields not only about econometric analysis but also in macro and micro economics, operations research, advanced statistics, and information technology. In addition, local students can benefit both from Farabi Exchange Program through Turkish Universities and Erasmus exchange Program through European universities for one or two semesters.
In the 2012-2013 Academic Year, Department of Econometrics continues education and research activities with an academic staff consists of 5 professors, 4 associate professor, 5 assistant professors and 14 research assistants. Department of Econometrics do research and give education on issues related to proper analysis and decision-making on economic and business problems with the help of mathematics, statistics and operations research.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Having basic theoretical knowledge on economy and administrative sciences.
2   Collecting, analyzing and interpreting data based on macro, micro and sector contexts.
3   Using an appropriate Turkish in both written and verbal statements on econometrics.
4   Using information technologies about econometrics, statistics and operations research.
5   Tracking information in econometrics also at this point, making conversation and discussing with native and foreigner colleagues.
6   Doing research in econometric subjects, using this information for maximum quality in research, reporting and presentation.
7   Having professional morality and responsibility.
8   Showing compatible attitude with team work and developing empathy, completing all duties and when necessary managing the team.
9   Being open minded and having self confidence while decision making during implementing new ideas.
10   Perceiving questions, having multi-directional thoughts and interpretation against events; being able to thinking flexible, taking risk and making fast decisions as an ability of analytical thinking.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Bachelors Diploma is given to the graduates from the department of econometrics. Graduates are expected to have the competence of analysis and synthesis on related areas of econometrics, statistics and operations research with the ability to easily follow and discuss about all kinds of economic literature.
Graduates are able to find jobs in both the public and private sectors. They can apply to the exams for various positions such as inspectorate, auditor, and assistant specialist declared by various ministries. Some institutions which require frequent data analysis and synthesis such as Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI), the State Planning Organization (SPO), the Treasury, Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA), and the Central Bank prefer Econometrist. Also various public and private institutions which are active in areas such as insurance, banking, and capital markets employ graduates. They can be employed in the planning, budget, and research and development departments of companies. They also can undertake academic careers by pursuing postgraduate degrees.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates who completed undergraduate programmes requirements successfully can register to second and third cycle pogrammes (masters and doctorate) of national and international higher education institutions if they can meet the related requirements.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 90 courses in the program. 52 of those courses are compulsory while 38 are elective. Nine of the selective courses are Erasmus courses. Students select 10 of the elective courses in four years of educational period. The ratio of elective courses to total courses is 20,3 %. As ECTS point of view, the ratio of electives to total courses is 21,2 %. 25 of the compulsory courses and 17 of the elective courses are offered by other departments of the faculty.

The relevant articles of ASSOCIATE AND UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND EXAM REGULATIONS (http://www.deu.edu.tr/DEUWeb/Icerik/Icerik.php KOD=5683) of the Council of Higher Education and EDUCATION AND EXAM APPLICATION REGULATIONS of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Dokuz Eylül University (http://www.iibf.deu.edu.tr/sanal_ ogrenci/ sayfa=genel/yonetmelikler/ogretim_sinav_uygulama_esaslari.htm) are applied to the exam and course grades.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation requirements are as described in the Qualification Requirements and Rules section. The requirement for graduation is to complete all of the courses in the programme (equivalent to 240 ECTS total) successfully and to have a CGPA of minimum 2.00 out of 4.00.
