General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Social Sciences Maritime Business Administration Department was established in 1993. Under the roof of this Department, Maritime Business Administration Masters Program started education in 1993. The program aims to educate, improve and expertise its students who will work in the land side of maritime businesses, teach them the philosophy of science. The graduates of the program will be able to carry out scientific researches and can be employed as middle or top level managers in maritime organizations both in public and private sector.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; a minimum score of 55 from the Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 50 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM or a minimum score of 55 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test. Transcript; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Profile of the Programme

In Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Social Sciences Maritime Business Administration Department Maritime Business Administration Masters Program, by the year of 2013, 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 7 assistant professors, 3 lecturers, and 3 research assistants are active in the education and research activities. Education and research related with the program are carried out in 6 classrooms, and Port operations, Logistics, Computer and Management Simulation labs. Students and academics have access to both wireless and Ethernet line internet connections and a library. The medium of instruction is English.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Collects and interprets the data related to the main and side fields of maritime business management, taking into consideration the social, scientific, vocational and ethical values, supervises/controls this knowledge at the stage of implementation, and acts as a leader in efforts to protect such values.
2   Leads the multidisciplinary teams, develops with the sense of responsibility overcoming solutions to the complicated situations involved in maritime business management.
3   Fulfils problem-solving mechanisms in maritime business affairs, considering the priorities in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, quality, safety and ecology which would concern the maritime business enterprises, customers, users, and all stakeholders within such a triple concept of international, national and societal outlook.
4   Creates new knowledge, using information processing competencies, and enhances self-improvement through making use of life-long learning facilities.
5   Achieves deep and thorough access to the required knowledge in maritime business administration through self-regulated, independent studies and scientific researches; evaluates, interprets and applies the new knowledge.
6   Acts in compliance with the requirements of total quality management principles.
7   Conducts independently and on his/her own scientific studies requiring professional/specialized qualification/competence related to the main and side fields of transportation.
8   Designs and applies analytical, modelling and experiment based researches; analyzes and interprets complicated situations related to maritime business administration.
9   Develops strategies, policies and implementation plans in the main and side fields of maritime business administration; implements/applies them to the vocational fields and assess the results in the scope of quality processes.
10   Presents the developments and the results of his/her studies in maritime business administration to the national and international media / platforms through systematic approaches and in written or oral form.
11   Integrates the theoretical and practical knowledge related to maritime business administration, economics, law, logistics, transport and other relevant fields into the problem-solving processes concerning these fields and uses it in overcoming the likely problems.
12   Develops proposals in accordance with the social, legal and environmental (ecological) dimensions of maritime business administration practices; plans proactive problem-solving alternatives and puts these plans into effective practice.
13   Solves the problems encountered in the field of maritime business administration, making the best use of contemporary business administration techniques.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Maritime Business Administration Masters Program are employed in a wide range of positions in both private and public sectors. The graduates can acquire positions in top level management of different fields of the private sector, such as shipowning and ship management companies, ship agents, export-import companies, marine insurance companies, ports, logistic companies, yachting companies and marinas. In public sector, our graduates can be employed in administrative duties in Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, other related ministry offices and public institutions. Also graduates can be employed as research assistants, lecturers, or academics in universities.

Students of the program should take atotal of 4 mandatory and 5 elective courses. The number of total electives for two semesters is 18. All elective courses are carried out by the Department. None of the courses require a prerequisite. All courses ar efor a semester. The courses in the program provide insight, skill and expertise on acquiring information about maritime businesses, researching the concepts, ideas and notions in a scientific manner, analyze and understand the data collected and keeping up with the new trends and developments in the related area of expertise.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 51 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (6 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
