General Description

History

Master of Science in Audiology programme started education at 1983 in Institute of Health Sciences by the approval of The Council of Higher Education. Program duration is 2 years (1 year for tuition course, 1 year for master of science thesis) . Program language is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor s Degree; having obtained at least 55 from relevant branch of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or from exams equivalence of which are accepted; in case of graduate of Faculty of Medicine having obtained at least 50 from Medical Specialty Exam (TUS); having obtained at least 50 from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from other foreign language exams equivalence of which are accepted or at least 55 from the exam held by DEU Foreign Languages Institute. Transcript; having obtained at least 65 from the Post Graduate Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. In total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of the Programme is graduating audiologists who can use their skills and abilities for the benefit of society effectively, who developed motives for lifelong learning, who can lead and initiate social and scientific developments, and who can apply diagnostic tests and rehabilitative methods to the patients with hearing, balance or speech disorders. The Audiology Unit, besides teaching activities, actively performs various theoretical and applied researches.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Acquire basic understanding of the acoustic, anatomical, psychological, developmental and social aspects of normal and disordered hearing.
2   Acquire basic understanding of the anatomical, physiological, psychological and functional aspects of normal and pathological balance.
3   Capable of preparing and presenting oral and written presentations in the field of audiology.
4   Be able to perform an otoscopic examination using a handheld otoscope.
5   Know the fundamental components of the immitance instrumentation and describe how the admittance of the middle ear is measured using tympanomety and acoustic reflex tests.
6   Acquire basic information of the selecting and fitting of hearing aids and cochlear implants.
7   Capable of performing basic objective (otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem responses, acoustic immitancemeter test) and subjective (pure tone and speech audiometry, free field testing) audiological test techniques.
8   Be able to define the criteria of masking and implement masking procedures in patients.
9   Understand how audiometric results can help provide differential diagnoses of common auditory disorders.
10   Identify disorders associated outer and middle ears, inner ear, eighth nerve and how these disorders affect hearing, speech and balance functions.
11   Be able to gain ability to apply, write and present a thesis, and publish in a scientific format.
12   Be able to apply the audiologic process in the newborn hearing screening program.
13   Acquire level of foreign language knowledge in the literature has followed.
14   Acquire the basic information about audiologic equipment and their calibration.
15   Knowledgable in the area of the normal and disordered stages of language and communicative abilities of children.
16   Capable of testing language and communicative abilities of children.
17   Be able to perform all necessary behavioral test techniques in normal as well as disordered children.
18   Be able to perform basic voice and speech assessment as well as speech and voice rehabilitation techniques in patients.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of students will be performed during 2 midterm examinations, 1 final examination, homework and various project studies. Students must have obtained minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
