General Description

History

Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation was established under the Institute of Health Science (IHS) with the approval decree of Higher Education Institute (Y.Ö.K.) at 1993. Master Program of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy graduated physiotherapists with masters degree under the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation between the years of 1999-2010. After the establishment of Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation by Y.Ö.K. with the date of 18/11/2009 and number of 5754/37752, Master Program of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy was incorporated in Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation with the decree of the senate of the Dokuz Eylül University with the issue number of 25.05.2010/368-06. The length of the program is 4 semesters including 2 semesters for the courses and 2 semesters for the thesis. The language of the program is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor s Degree; having obtained at least 55 from relevant branch of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or from exams equivalence of which are accepted; in case of graduate of Faculty of Medicine having obtained at least 50 from Medical Specialty Exam (TUS); having obtained at least 50 from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from other foreign language exams equivalence of which are accepted or at least 55 from the exam held by DEU Foreign Languages Institute. Transcript; having obtained at least 65 from the Post Graduate Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. İn total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Department of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy was established with the decree of the senate of the Dokuz Eylül University with the issue number of 250-6 and date of 22.06.1999. Courses of the program are carried out in School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation situated in the Health Campus of Dokuz Eylül University.
Objective of the course is to educate specialist physiotherapists who are able to assess the patient using evidence based knowledge in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, plan and perform physical therapy and rehabilitation program, to give advices on promoting health and preventing injuries and to give special exercise programs to children, adults, elderly, healthy people, athletes in musculoskeletal physiotherapy scope, who have skills to plan and conduct a scientific research.
The program is consisted of 8 compulsory, 17 elective courses in total 25 courses that include topics on theoretical knowledge and applications in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy, improving skills to plan, conduct and present a scientific research and presentation, studying ethical principles.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Expresses the main lines of the relation between musculoskeletal system structures, their functions and relations with the other body structures in advance level.
2   Defines the biomechanics and pathomechanics of musculoskeletal system.
3   Theoretically specifies the physiotherapy assessment and treatment methods for musculoskeletal system diseases.
4   Has the ability of performing physiotherapy assessment and treatment methods.
5   Analyses the results of the physiotherapy assessments, plans the individual and disease specific treatment programs.
6   Explains advance level therapeutic exercises, creates individual exercise prescription.
7   Explains the ability of protecting and improving athlete s health, preventing injuries and developing specific programs for the athlete individually with the examples.
8   Interprets the evidence based physiotherapy methods in musculoskeletal system diseases and uses in his/her applications.
9   Follows Turkish and English literature.
10   Defines and uses the methods for reaching knowledge.
11   Explains ethical rules with the main lines in communications with his/her colleagues, patients and other disciplines.
12   Plans, completes and publishes a scientific research.
13   Uses effective presentation techniques in the field.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of the student is done by doing 1 mid-term exam and 1 final exam and also by evaluating their success on assignment and projects. 75 point must be achieved in 100 point grading system in order to pass the course.
