General Description

History

Marina Management programme has been giving a short-cycle (two-year) education since 2010-2011 academic year as part of Seferihisar Fevziye Hepkon Vocational School of Social Sciences which started its education activities on 3 December 2010. The programme which is the first programme established in the field of marina management in Turkey gave its first graduates in 2011-2012 academic year.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students are selected directly among graduates of related vocational high schools and also by a nation-wide Student Selection Examination conducted by Student Selection and Placement Center.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

For the students who are willing to transfer from higher education institutions in Turkey and abroad to Dokuz Eylul University, the related regulation of Higher Education Board and the evaluation procedures on transfers determined by the University Senate are applied. The numbers of transfers to be made are declared by the Higher Education Board. Evaluations are made by the commission formed by the Vocational School and declared after the decision of the relevant Vocational School Board.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student must complete 2 years of study acquiring 120 (ECTS) credits. This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all theoretical courses and applied courses in the curriculum and 30 working days of practical training. According to the Article 33 of Regulation of Dokuz Eylul University on education and examination in Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees, the student should have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of
2.00 on a 4.00 scale and also have got no failing grades in order to complete the education successfully and attain a diploma.

Profile of the Programme

Marina Management programme offers a period of two years education after high school. The objective of the programme of which medium of instruction is Turkish is to educate graduates who are candidate to work in the marina management sector as persons who has the required theoretical and practical knowledge, the skill of using the acquired knowledge in the field, competence of working independently or as part of a team and taking responsibility in the resolution of the problems encountered in work life and who can communicate effectively, discuss ideas and suggestions related to the professional area, comply with ethical values, have awareness of social responsibility and lifelong learning. 30 students are admitted to the programme each year. In the first year of education the programme offers courses such as business administration, economics, basic maritime and seamanship knowledge, marina management, yacht management, maritime legislation in order to provide the students with the essentials of the field of study, whereas in th second year of education the courses such as management and organization in marinas, sea operations in marinas, supply chain management in marinas, marina and custom procedures are offered. Some of the practical courses are carried out in marinas in the Aegean Region. In the last two semesters the students can learn the occupational terms in foreign language through the Professional Foreign Language courses. Besides the students must complete a period of 30 working days in practical training. This programme intends to include all kinds of practical and theoretical aspects of the field of study and it aims to equip students with the sectoral requirements.

6   To be able to use the technical means and instruments relevant to the field
7   To have foreign language knowledge enabling following information related to the field, to understanding and use occupational terms and communicating with the colleagues
8   To be able to take decision-making responsibility for the resolution of operational problems at marinas
9   To have the competence of reaching accurate and sufficient information in an effective way as well as the awareness of lifelong learning in a comprehension of the professional learning requirements
10   To be able to work and take responsibility independently or as a member of a group
11   To be aware of the ethical and social responsibility required by the profession, to act consciously on the issues such as workplace applications, health of workers, environment, security and safety
12   To be able to follow and interpret up-to-date developments in the marina management

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the marina management programme can work in public and private maritime enterprises such as marinas, broker agencies, harbours, ship construction establishments.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the marina management programme may apply to first cycle programmes, conferring a Bachelor's degree through a centralised placement examination.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 22 compulsory courses, 8 University compulsory courses and 6 elective courses in the marina management programme. The percentage of the elective courses to all courses is 17 percent. Student must select 2 elective courses per semester in the third and fourth semesters. Two of the 6 elective courses are offered by the tourism and hotel management programme of the Vocational School. The courses in the programme are offered in semesters and there are no preconditions for courses. Students can do practical training in all public and private maritime enterprises including marinas. Practical training is subject to the Practical Training Directive of the Vocational School.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation methods for every course are defined in the course syllabus form prepared by the relevant teaching staff and provided in the Information Package. The related articles of the Regulation of Dokuz Eylul University on Education and Examination in Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees and Implemetation Fundamentals of Education and Examination in Seferihisar Fevziye Hepkon Vocational School of Social Sciences are implemented for examinations and course pass marks.
