Course Objective

The course aims to study the major intellectual currents and figures in the Ottoman Empire since the late nineteenth century, and in Early Republican Turkey. Various intellectual currents that emerged in the late Ottoman Empire (Ottomanism, Turkism, positivism, Islamism, liberalism etc.), intellectual breaks and continuities with the past in Republican Turkey, recurrent and controversial themes, and intellectual transfers from the West will be examined.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Acquire advanced knowledge on the assumptions and ideas of key intellectual figures in Ottoman-Turkish political thought since the late 19th century until the mid-20th cc
2   Compare and contrast different approaches to political issues in the period for discussion, in order to identify the contested nature of politics and develop a critical outlook
3   Identify the social and political contexts which shaped intellectual currents and individual intellectuals in the period for discussion
4   Deliver elaborate and well articulated presentations of academic material to demonstrate a proficiency in presentation skills
5   Write a well-designed academic paper to demonstrate a proficiency in academic writing skills

Assessment Criteria

The students are expected to
1. Explain the basic concepts, assumptions and ideas of political thinkers discussed in class in a clear and consistent manner.
2. Compare and contrast different currents and thinkers.
3. Describe the social and political context in which a thinker lived and how this is reflected in his theory.
4. Present and discuss learning material in an elaborate and well organized manner.
5. Submit a well-designed research paper.

1. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
2. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
3. Students must read the learning material and participate in the discussions.
