Course Objective

This course aims to understand the political, economic and socio-cultural dynamics of the transition from the imperial state structures to modern nation-state formation in the Ottoman-Turkish polity. Special emphases will be placed on the ideological and political terrain of Turkish modernity in a comparative perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the shifts in the world economic and political systems since 16th century, and the changing place of the Ottoman empire in the European states-system
2   Describe the relation of the Ottoman state with different ethnic and religious groups within its territories to understand better the rise of nationalism in the 19th century and the nation-building process in Republican Turkey
3   Gain understanding of the evolution of the complex Ottoman land system and state structure in comparison with other empires
4   Analyze the Ottoman intellectual response to the changing world around it in order to gain an in depth and critical understanding of late Ottoman and early Republican history
5   Deliver elaborate and well articulated presentations of academic material to demonstrate a proficiency in presentation skills
6   Write a well-designed academic paper to demonstrate a proficiency in academic writing skills

Assessment Criteria

The students will:
1. Explain the large-scale and long-term developments in the world economic and political structure since 16th cc and how Ottoman Empire is incorporated in world capitalism.
2. Clearly describe how the Ottoman Empire administered different ethnic and religious groups, managed the ethnic awakening in the 19th cc, and the mechanisms and results of republican nation state-building.
3. Compare and contrast the economic and political structures of different world empires and their dissolution.
4. Explain and compare different currents in Ottoman-Turkish political and intellectual life.
5. Present and discuss selected learning material in an elaborate and well organized manner.
6. Submit a well-designed research paper.
