Course Objective

The aim of this course is to examine the role of science, technology and innovation in fostering economic growth in emerging economies as well as their increased participation in the global economy. It specifically focuses on the phenomena of technological catch- up and leapfrogging. The course is divided into four units. The first unit provides a conceptual foundation for understanding the role of technological innovation and the associated institutional innovation in the process of economic transformation. The second unit presents country experiences of technological catch-up and leapfrogging. The third unit analyzes the technological opportunities and challenges open to developing countries. The final section assesses the policy and institutional innovations needed to foster technological catch-up and leapfrogging.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Each session will be a mix of lectures and class discussion. Students are required to read extensively for each session. (The main reading list for each session is provided below.) Students are also required to prepare critical paper reviews (about two pages long), make class presentations, and take an active part in class discussion. In addition they are required to prepare one session paper of about 6 pages long. Paper reviews and session papers should be sent electronically to the whole group by the evening preceding the relevant session. All written work should be submitted to the instructor (hard copy) by evening (by 5.00 P.M) preceding the relevant session. Finally, students are required to prepare one paper (approximately 5,000 words) comprising a brief critical literature review.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will clearly define the key concepts of the economics of innovation and technology inducing globalization.
2. The learner will explain the structural transformations economic systems have gone through, through globalization theory.
3. The learner will define the evolution of technologies, convergence/divergence and innovation systems.
4. The learner will use necessary numerical and mathematical methods to analyze descriptive statistics of different industrial sector and country profiles.
5. The learner will make research about a specific topic and present it in line with economics of innovation and technology terminology.
