Course Objective

The main objective of this class is to examine the Pilgrimage Sites and temples, such as mosque, masjid, wall mosque, tomb, qunbad and dargah which situated among the most valuable tangible cultural heritage of the Islamic World (outside of Turkey), and increasingly protected by local governments or global organizations, in terms of architectural aesthetics, function and historical-social meaning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learning the basic terminology related to Islamic and Turkish architecture.
2   Recognising the important regions and the places with religious tourism, outside of Turkey.
3   Classifying types of buildings with pilgrimage, in terms of form and function.
4   Having knowledge about the historical and social meanings of the pilgrimage sites.
5   Understanding the importance of religious architecture in terms of faith tourism.

Course Contents

1 Introduction: Terminology related to Islamic arts and architecture.
2 The construction of the ancient pilgrimage site, Ka'ba, and the circumambulation cult.
3 Muslims and Ka'ba.
4 The beginning of the Islamic temple architecture: Masjid al-Nabi.
5 Qubbat Al-Sakhra and Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
6 Great Mosque of Cordoba: Muslims in the West.
7 The first burial structures in the Muslim World: Form and function.
8 The spread of burial structures in the 10.-13. century Islamic world, and the ancestral cult among the Turkic Tribes.
9 Visiting places and shrines in the 14th -15th century Iran and Turkestan.
10 Pilgrimage sites and temples in the 12th-15th century Indian Subcontinent.
11 Mughals in the 16th-19th century Indian Subcontinent: Humayun's Mausoleum and Nizamuddin's Dargah
12 Mughals in the 16th-19th century Indian Subcontinent: Fatehpur Sikri and Taj Mahal.
13 General Review: Historical and cultural value of pilgrimage shrines in terms of faith tourism.
