Course Objective

The principal purpose of the class is to analyze the Pilgrimage Sites and temples, such as mosque, masjid, wall mosque, tomb, qunbad and dargah with cultural and artistic value in Turkey, in terms of form, function, character, architectural aesthetics, and historical-social meaning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn the basic terminology related to the Anatolian Turkish architecture.
2   To recognize the historical cities and buildings of Seljuk, Beyliks and Ottoman period in Turkey.
3   To classify the building types in Anatolian Turkish architecture, in terms of form and function.
4   To have knowledge about the historical and social meanings of the muslim pilgrimage sites in Turkey.
5   To understand the importance of Turkish-Islamic architecture, in terms of faith tourism.

6 Ahlat Seljuks Cemetery: historical identity..
7 Rumi Dargah (Lodge) and Haji Bektash-i Vali Dargah: form, function and historical attraction/destination.
8 Birgi, Selçuk and Manisa during the Beyliks.
9 Iznik in Ottomans period: muslim shrines and visiting places.
10 Bursa in Ottomans period: muslim shrines and visiting places
11 Edirne in Ottomans period: muslim shrines and visiting places.
12 Istanbul in Ottomans period: muslim shrines and visiting places.
