Transportation

Bus: The Turkish bus transportation system is comprehensive and the fares are reasonable which enables you to get anywhere you want in Izmir.
Izmir has a large “Bus Station” in Pınarbaşı which has intercity buses to the destinations across Turkey.

Marine Transportation: Izmir has the largest port after Istanbul. It plays a vital role for the Turkish economy and also transportation in Izmir.

Innercity Transportation

Inner-city transportation is cheap and offers various alternatives like buses, ferries, subway, taxis, shared taxis and Izban. Izban is a commuter railway system serving İzmir and its metropolitan area and is used by approximately 150,000 passengers daily.
For public transportation, citizens use KENTKART which is a kind of chipcard used on public buses, ferries, subway and enables the users to travel more cheaply around İzmir. There are also discounts for the students.

Climate
Izmir shows all the characteristics of the Mediterranean climate which is characterized by long, hot and dry summers and mild to cool, rainy winters. The temperatures during the winter months vary between 5o C – 10o C and during summer the air temperature ranges between 25o C – 40o C.

Language
The official language in Turkey is Turkish and it is written in the Latin alphabet.

Communication Services
Turkish telephone network is provided by Türk Telekom which is the formerly state-owned Turkish telecommunications company. It offers all kinds of national and international telecommunication services in Turkey. People in Turkey can call anywhere in and outside the country.
Turkey’s country code is +90 and Izmir’s city code is 232. A person who wants to call a number in Izmir, has to dial firstly the Turkish code (+90), secondly İzmir’s code (232) and lastly the seven digit number of the place/person (999 99 99).
There are also Public service telephones which are operated by magnetic card, credit card or smart cards. People can buy these cards from Türk Telekom dealers at the current tariff rates.

The Internet is also widely used in Turkey. There are internet cafes available for people who want access to the internet cheaply. Besides, most of the cafe, bars, and restaurants provide wireless internet for their customers. Students can take advantage of the university libraries and university cafes for free internet.

Post-Cargo-Courier Services
Post-Cargo-Courier Services are provided both by public and private institutions in Turkey. PTT is the public institutuion which offers postal, cargo, courier, money order, bill payments, selling telephone cards, ticket, catalogues, exchange foreign currency, insurance transactions and internet package services.
There are also international and domestic private companies which offer domestic and international cargo and courier services.

Banking Services and Credit Cards
The banking sector has a vital role in the Turkish Economy. There are approximately 50 investment, development and commercial banks operating in Turkey.
People can exchange foreign currency, make online money orders, credit card payments and cash cheques. People can easily find bank branches and ATM’s at various locations on the University campus.
International credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard and American Express are valid in almost all locations in Izmir.

Academic Calender
The Academic year consists of two terms. Fall term begins in September and ends in January, spring term begins in February and ends in June. Terms consist of 16/17 weeks.
Orientation Program: Erasmus incoming students’ orientation program which is organized in the first week of the semester, consists of general information about Turkey & Turkish Culture, useful practical matters and a trip to Ephesus &Şirince.

Turkish Language Course: Turkish Language Course is offered to all Erasmus Exchange Students, free of charge every friday afternoon during one semester. It aims to teach basic practical Turkish which can be useful for daily life. Students will acquire 3 ECTS Credits and a certificate at the end of the course if they take 70/100 points.

Visa: Prior to their arrival to Turkey, Erasmus students must obtain an education visa from the Turkish consulates at their home countries.

Residence Permit: The students who stay in Turkey longer than 3 months, have to apply for a residence permit at the Department of Foreigners of the Izmir Security Office within one month after their arrival in Turkey.
