History

The department of English Language Education has offered Doctoral Degree since 1995 and has 6 students at present.

Third Cycle (The Doctoral Degree Program) in English Language Education is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled all programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma, min GPA 80/100 or 3/4, minimum score of 70 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields, minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained fromTOEFL/IELTS/etc, and being successful at the science examination of the Institute in the related fields (minimum score of 70).Transcript.
Candidates have to submit documents regarding Second Cycle (Master s Degree) diploma with a GPA of minimum 80, minimum score of 70 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields, acceptable minimum score of 60 from Foreign Language (German, English, French; any language other than the medium of instruction) Exams (UDS/KPDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained from TOEFL/IELTS/etc. or at the foreign language examination of the Language School of DEU, with the minimum score 80 in the language of the courses in the programme they are going to take.
All candidates get the exams and their interview grades are calculated as 60 % of their written exam grade + 40 % their oral exam grades.
Interview : %60 written exam + 40% oral exam
If the candidates interview scores are above 70, they are considered as successful according to the Regulation number 4d of DEU and overall scores will be commutated through ALES score, GPA, and the interview score.
Evaluation : % 50 of their ALES grades, % 25 of their cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and % 25 of their interview grades.
After their displacement according to the evaluation score, the highest ranking candidates as many as quota are entitled to enrol in the program. The same number of the candidates is announced on the waiting list. Those who are entitled to enrol in the program have to register within the due dates. If not, the candidates in the waiting list apply for the admission.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
The programme consists of a minimum of seven courses, one seminar course, and a thesis study, with a minimum of 21 local credits. The total ECTS credits of the programme are 240 ECTS.
In addition to students midterm and final grades, students reports, quiz results, seminar presentations and project results can be used to evaluate the students semester performances. In order for a student to be successful, he has to get minimum 75 out of 100 (2.5 out of 4.00). Seminar lesson and the thesis are considered as non credit courses and students are evaluated as successful and unsuccessful.
A doctoral degree student must write the results of the thesis according to the specifications of the Graduate School Thesis Writing Guide and must defend the thesis in front of a jury with an oral presentation. After oral presentation, the jury vote the thesis as "acceptance", "reject" or "correction". A student may be given, by a decision of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School, up to six months to complete the corrections and defend his thesis in front of the same jury.

The aim of the programme is to prepare students for a research-oriented career in academic, public, or private sector
The program is designed to promote personal and professional growth for both education and English language. The language of instruction is English.

1   Students are equipped with English language teaching methods and SLA concepts and definitions.
2   They know how to generate the new knowledge in SLA and ELT and discuss the research methods related to them.
3   They adapt the language teaching programs, strategies, approaches and techniques to their own teaching conditions and make use of his/her existent knowledge of language testing and evaluation.
4   They know how to use all the sources including CALL and MALL
5   They choose the best teaching strategies, approaches and techniques, considering the individual and developmental differences of students and the subject area.
6   They develop appropriate teaching materials, taking the students needs into consideration
7   They collaborate with other English teachers, participate in various organizations and conferences and follow the recent literature on language
8   They know their weaknesses and strengths as teachers and try to improve those weaknesses.
9   They equip themselves with the background knowledge to better themselves and use all the sources.
10   They make a difference in finding a better and more self fulfilling career
11   They implement their knowledge on methods and techniques, maket he teaching process more qualified and set a model for students

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree provides the rights and privileges to practice the profession.
The graduates of English Language Education enjoy productive careers at the universities, in public and private schools run by the Ministry of National Education as teachers and work in these institutions as language teachers, researchers and senior advisers and in many other areas of the public service as civil servants. In addition, students may work in the language related areas of the private sector.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.
Graduates who successfully completed the doctoral degree and pass the proficiency test other than English may apply to the related departments at the universities as a lecturer or an assist.Prof.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. In order for students to qualify for midterms they should attend 70% of the theoretical classes and 80% of the application/lab classes.
For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations: One midterm examination (given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester) and one final exam. The instructor announces the weekly course content, the course book and how students will be evaluated and the dates of the exams to the students and the Institute at the beginning of the semester. The instructor evaluates the students depending on their midterm and final grades, attendance, their additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments.
A make up exam is offered for graduate classes. Upon the approval of the Institute Board, students can take the exam from the lessons that they have already passed in order to increase their GPA.
To be able to pass a course, a graduate student must have minimum CB.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of at least 7 courses (minimum 21, maximum 30 national credits) more than, passing a qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits. The programme consists of a minimum of seven courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, one seminar course, and thesis, with a minimum of 21 local credits. The total ECTS credits of the programme is 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements in detail are explained in the section Qualification Requirements and Regulations .
