History

The Department of Medical Microbiology department was founded in 1978 under the Eagen Univercity of Izmir Medical Faculty. Since then department subsists in Dokuz Eylul University of Medical faculty. In addition to education of specialization in medicine our department also opens a programs for Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Master and Doctoral programs within the scope of Institute of Health Sciences. Thirteen faculty members competent in different areas of medical microbiology take part. Medical Microbiology MSc programme has been started in the academic year 1984-1985. The training programme lasts two years including two semesters of courses and two semesters of thesis work. The programme language is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor s Degree; having obtained at least 55 from relevant branch of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or from exams equivalence of which are accepted; in case of graduate of Faculty of Medicine having obtained at least 50 from Medical Specialty Exam (TUS); having obtained at least 50 from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from other foreign language exams equivalence of which are accepted or at least 55 from the exam held by DEU Foreign Languages Institute. Transcript; having obtained at least 65 from the Post Graduate Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. İn total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

The department of Medical Microbiology has started its graduate training in the year 1985-1986. The objectives of this programme are to educate individuals having a good maitrise of basic and up-dated theoretical and laboratory information in basic and medical biochemistry and closely related fields, to train students in basic laboratory skills as well as those skills necessary for their thesis, to teach them how to analyse, make a synthesis, and evaluate, to train them in data searching and in scientific methodology and in effective scientific communication. Students can choose electives from other departments as well as from other universities.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of courses take place using two mid-term and one final examination, written assignments, and projects. The minimum requirement for success is 75/100 points.
