DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Music Technology

General Description

History

The year after the foundation of the Department of Musicology in 1975, the first steps in forming the music technology program were taken but it couldn t be achieved until 22.04.1991, due to the lack of resources of the time. With the approval of the Council of Higher Education, music technology education began as an `optional program named Electro-acoustic Audio Technique . The optional program became Music Technology Programme in 1996, and finally in 2008 the program became a 4 year bachelor s degree program under the Branc of Music Technology . Music Technology programme offers 4 year undergraduate education with courses focused mainly on practical and theoretical aspects of music technology, as well as courses in music theory and practice.

Qualification Awarded

Profile of the Programme

Music Technology program are implemented in the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
The purpose of the program is to identify the music technology related concepts and the terminology, explaining the theoretical and practical differences of the procedures in music technolog and to use computers with practical knowledge of computer hardware and software and solving problems with efficiency incorporating the theoretical and practical knowledge

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To identify the music technology related concepts and the terminology in relevant disciplines such as music, electrics and electronics engineering and fundamental sciences, maths and physics.
2   To explain the theoretical and practical differences of the procedures in music technology related fields such as sound recording studios, sound reinforcement systems, broadcast, audio for visual arts, music arranging, sound design and acoustics.
3   To perform the basic required tasks in professional sound recording studios such as the efficient use of studio hardware and software, correctly routing audio signals and maintaining audio signal flow etc. as well as perform more advanced tasks in editing, mixing and mastering.
4   To have a solid foundation of the music technology terminology in order to speed up the research process and efficient practical skills, fundamental knowledge of the shared terminology and interactions with relevant disciplines in order to understand their relationships with music technology.
5   To use computers with practical knowledge of computer hardware and software, basic operational principles and terminology.
6   To show practical competence in working areas in the field.
7   To identify the cultural, stylistic and technical characteristics of transnational (Western art music, mainstream popular genres, world music etc.) and national (modal/maqam) musical practices.
8   To analyze and use sound reinforcement systems and their components, updating systems in order to provide the required sound reinforcement, interpretation of modern sound reinforcement design methods with knowledge in technologic trends.
9   To solve problems with efficiency incorporating the theoretical and practical knowledge, efficiently choose and use the required hardware and software in music technology projects.
10   To present the results of research project in written (research report, proceeding, thesis, paper etc.) and verbal (seminar, conference, symposium etc.) forms.
11   To play at least one musical instrument with tonal (piano, guitar etc.) or modal (baglama, ud, kemenche etc.) characteristics.
12   To aurally comprehend, analyze and transcribe music.
13   To design, analyze and interpret sound reinforcement systems and acoustical projects, using the data from analysis hardware & software.
14   To instantly notice and correct performance mistakes in recording sessions.
15   To keep his/her knowledge in science and technology up-to-date with the principle of lifelong learning.
16   To have technological and aural skills for the creation of a 'new sound' in various musical genres
17   To work in interdisciplinary research teams, workgroups etc. as an independent team member with the motivation in taking responsibility and solving problems.
18   To show strong social and communicative competences in music technology sector with respect to quality and required standards.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
