General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy Graduate Program was established in 2014. The Philosophy Doctorate Program aims to bring up researchers who are able to develop and deepen their knowledge in various philosophical theories to an expert level building on the competencies of the masters education; who are able to provide the knowledge and skills for high quality scientific research in Philosophy for a successful career in academia, the public and private sectors; who have an advanced level of knowledge and background to track developments and contribute to current debate in their fields of choice; who can apply advanced Philosophical theories and methods to articulate their research to national and international audiences both in writing and orally.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy program has seven academic members from different disciplines, one instructor and three research assistants. 4 year doctorate program of Department of Philosophy consists at least 8 semesters. The language of the courses that offered in the program is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Being able to comprehend how different disciplines of philosophy seperate from each other according to which criteria and concepts and to define questions and problems releated to it.
2   Being able to examine the solutions to the basic questions of philosophy put forward by the theories which are being introduced at the different stages of the development of philosophy.
3   Being able to evaluate the theories which presented by various philosophers in diverse areas of philosophy by establishing the relationship between them and to evaluate the solutions comparatively.
4   Being able to notice and comparatively evaluate the different solutions presented by the philosophers to the basic problems of philosophy.
5   Being able to transfer the basic and contemporary philosophical problems and the solutions proposed for those problems by major and contemporary philosophers, verbally and written.
6   Being able to evaluate the basic and contemporary philosophical questions and the theories which put forward as a solution to these questions in conjunction with the local and global problems.
7   Being able to discuss various philosophical problems and the current solutions to these problems by establishing a connection with practical and theoretical problems.
8   Being able to create new theories based on practical and theoretical philosophical questions with the help of new philosophical problems.
9   Being able to create new theories based on practical and theoretical philosophical questions with the help of new philosophical problems.
10   Being able to transfer others the solutions to the new philosophical questions that he/she found, both verbally and in a written form and in an academical competence.
11   Being able to compare the data which have been obtained from the history of philosophy in both local and global scale with the data which have been obtained from the existing substantial situation.
12   Being able to seek solution ways to the philosophical questions behind current situation that are both in a local and a global scale by adding current data to the current philosophical questions.
13   Being able to theorize the new philosophical questions in the light of the new data obtained from the analysis which are carried out locally and globally.
14   Being able to put forward different thesis for the revealed problems of current situation which includes the data obtained from the history of philosophy.
15   Being able to transfer the theories which includes his/her solutions to clarify the philosophical problems of the current situation to the others, verbally and in the written form.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree enables the holder to exercise the profession at assistant or associate professor position. Besdies academic field, the speciality acquired by this doctorate degree provide employment in various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services and etc., private educational institutions, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres and industrial establishments.

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Third Cycle (Doctorate) Degree in Philosophy with thesis comprises 6 compulsory and 9 elective courses, adding up to 15 courses in total in three academic terms and 1 specialization course in seven academic terms. Students need to complete 30 ECTS from courses, 3 ECTS from specialization course and 141 ECTS from thesis, in total 240 ECTS. Students should be graduated with 3.2/4.00 or 80/100 GPA for a third cycle (Doctorate Degree).

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (83 ECTS), a field study (4 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
