General Description

History

Second Cycle Program of Opera Department was first established in 1991 in the Institute of Social Sciences, Dokuz Eylül University. In 2002, the program was transferred to Fine Arts Institute at İnciraltı campus. The program is open to all students of conservatory who has the first cycle diploma of Opera Department.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 15 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Second Cycle Program of Opera Department is primarily intended for students who hold a Bachelor s degree in Opera and whose aim is to be specialized in field and make a academic career or make a progress as a performer. Students of this program during the first two semesters besides taking performance lessons such as Voice Training, Acting, Opera and Song Literature, they also improve their substructure knowledge of music by taking theoretical courses such as Opera History and Voice Anatomy and Physiology. The education process ends up with a thesis that would be completed in two semesters and a final recital.
The students may use the music library, music studio and practice rooms of conservatory. There are 6 faculty members in the department.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Be able to have expert knowledge of branch-specific art culture and aesthetics at a master s degree level
2   Be able to have knowledge at a master s degree level about the relationship of theory and practice in a project developed as a result of his/her creativity based on qualifications obtained from the bachelor's degree knowledge and skills
3   Be able to develop and deepen the knowledge, methods and techniques of his/her own field based on qualifications obtained from the bachelor's degree
4   Be able to relate the knowledge, methods and techniques of his/her field to other disciplines
5   Be able to interpret or produce a high level work of art either alone or with a group at a master's degree level
6   Be able to develop multi-dimensional perception, thought, conceptual and implementation skills at a master's degree level
7   Be able to transfer practices related to his/her field through performance method
8   Is able to communicate verbally and in writing in at least one foreign language (European Language Portfolio General Level: B2 Level)
9   Be able to define and interpret works by discerning their stylistic characteristics
10   Be able to transfer the knowledge, conventions and experiences of the relevant field of art in an ethical and professional manner
11   Be able to apply and share the knowledge, skills and competences he/she gained in interdisciplinary research environments within a team.
12   Be able to make independent research on the written and visual materials of a music piece and apply the knowledge to his/her performance
13   Be able to contribute to artistic improvement in national and international level while being open to new tecniques in opera art , internalizing the life-long learning principles and being aware of the sociological and cultural effects of artistic studies.
14   Be able to combine and use the theoretical and practical knowledge skills which obtained from the bachelor's degree with an effective determination

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Second Cycle Program of Opera Department can be employed in national and international opera houses as soloists or choir members. They can sing as freelance solo singers in Symphonic orchestras, chamber music groups and chamber orchestras. They can be employed either in private or public choirs as well. They can also find a position in academic institutions as lecturers and make further academic studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Graduate School of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 75. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of at least 7 courses, not being less than 21 national credits, a seminar and specialization courses and thesis studies, in total 120 ECTS credits.
