General Description

History

The department of Primary Teacher Education has offered Doctorate Degree since 2003, and has offered the Doctorate degree to 2 students at present.

The Phd Degree in Primary Teacher Education is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma, min GPA 80/100 or 3/4, minimum score of 70 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields, minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS/YDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained fromTOEFL/IELTS/etc, and being successful at the science examination of the Institute in the related fields (minimum score of 70).Transcript.
Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma, minimum score of 70 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields, acceptable minimum score of 70 from Foreign Language (German, English, French) Exams (UDS/KPDS/YDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained from TOEFL/IELTS/etc. and being successful at the science examination (interview) of the Institute in the related fields (with a minimum score of 70).
Their interview grades are calculated as 60 % of their written exam grade + 40 % their oral exam grades.

Candidates whose interview grades are 70 and above will be considered successfull according to the DEU Graduate School Regulations. Their ALES grades, grade point average (CGPA) and interviewing grades are calculated as their Evaluation Grades.

Evaluation Grades: % 50 of their ALES grades, % 25 of their cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and % 25 of their interview grades.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. In order for students to qualify for midterms they should attend 70% of the theoretical classes. Students attendance is followed by their Instructor. For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations: One midterm examination (given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester) and one final exam. The instructor announces the weekly course content, the course book and how students will be evaluated and the dates of the exams to the students and the Institute at the beginning of the semester. The instructor evaluated the students depending on their midterm and final grades, attendance to the class, their additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments which were presented at the beginning of the semester.
A make up exam is offered for graduate classes. Upon the approval of the Institute Board students can take the exam from the lessons that they have already passed in order to increase their GPA.
To be able to pass a lesson a graduate student must have minimum CB.

Profile of the Programme

Aims of the Doctorate Program of Primary School Teacher Education are; to train specialists and academicians who are open to changes and developments and who can put forward solutions and new models to problems in the branch s/he has specialized in, renew and update themselves with the necessities of the modern age and keep up with and practice the national and international repertoire and adopt lifelong learning and science as a way of living.
The program is designed to promote personal and professional growth for primary teacher education fields. The language of instruction is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Being able to get specialized in their branch with advanced and up-to-date knowledge with original thinking and research based on their proficiency of the Postgraduate Degree in the Division of Primary School Teacher Education.
2   Being able to reach new knowledge in Primary School Teacher Education and edit it and produce new knowledge systematically.
3   Being able to develop an innovative scientific approach in Primary School Teacher Education or apply an already-known method into a different field of study.
4   Being able to evaluate and make a critical analysis and synthesis of the new and complex ideas put forward in Primary School Teacher Education.
5   Being able to do original research and contribute to science to solve a problem in Primary School Teacher Education.
6   Being able to do original research independently and/or lead or take part in team-work actively in Primary School Teacher Education in an interdisciplinary manner.
7   Being able to develop new ideas, methods and models by using advanced level intellectual processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making.
8   Being able to act in accordance with the ethical values during producing and sharing knowledge in the processes of learning and teaching.
9   Being able to develop and practice effective teaching strategies in order to gain students the required skills and knowledge in Primary School Teacher Education.
10   Being able to have a good command of a foreign language at least in the level of C 1 European Language Portfolio and use it effectively and communicatively in his/her studies and join discussions.
11   Being able to use strategic decision making processes in order to solve problems in Primary School Teacher Education and interact with the related persons or institutions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree provides the rights and privileges to practice the profession.
The graduates of Primary Teacher Education Phd Program enjoy productive careers in public and private schools run by the Ministry of National Education as teachers and in many other areas of the public service as civil servants.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.
Graduates who successfully completed the Phd Degree may apply to post-doctorate programmes in the same discipline.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of at least 7 courses (minimum 21, maximum 30 national credits) more than, passing a qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits.
The programme consists of a minimum of seven courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, one seminar course, and thesis, with a minimum of 21 local credits. The total ECTS credits of the programme is 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements in detail are explained in the section Qualification Requirements and Regulations .
