General Description

History

The PhD program in International Relations aims at equipping students with advanced level of theoretical and practical knowledge, (oral, written and research) skills and competency, as well as with specialization on International Relations. In addition, in an attempt to qualify its students for research institutions and universities, the program aims to train the students with critical, creative and original thinking skills. The language of the program is English.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum GPA 80/100 or 3/4; minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields; minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS/YDS) or TOEFL/IELTS equivalent or a minimum score 70 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school entrance exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The PhD program gathers international politics, political thoughts and history, international law and related specialization fields. The students are free to determine their specialization fields by elective courses. It is important to develop analytical and communication skills of the students.
Currently, the International Relations Department has 23 full-time academic personnel, including 2 professors, 3 associate and 5 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 10 research assistants. In the past few years, members of the Department have been awarded a series of research fellowships such as Turkish Higher Educational Council, Jean Monnet and the British Academy. There are library, computer lab and wireless internet to support the students.

3   Learn to use their knowledge on the basic concepts, theories and applications to develop publishable original studies.

5   Communicate competently and clearly, both verbally and in writing.
6   Analyze international issues from a variety of different perspectives.
7   Develop skills of critical analysis in relation to the political, socio-cultural, economic and legal developments in national and international agenda.
8   Communicate competently and clearly with colleagues by speaking, reading and writing English at Common European Framework of Reference Level C 1.
9   Convey their ideas and thoughts effectively and clearly, verbally and in writing, by using related language and terminology in their field.
10   Develop competence on information technology (including computer skills) required by its field.
11   Acquire awareness on scientific and social ethics.
12   Develop original ideas and approaches for problem solving.
13   Attend the national and international conferences.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates work as academic members in various universities, specialists or consultants in public institutions, research centres and civil society organizations.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Obligatory and elective courses continue for one semester. In the second and third semesters, more advanced issues are studies. 27 ECTS thesis starts in the third semester. a. Elective Courses in the Department All elective courses are offered by the academic members in the department. The courses are Advanced Issues in Foreign Policy Analysis, International Dispute Resolution, Contemporary Issues in International Politics, Reading and Research in Asia, Ethics in International Relations, New Perspectives on International Security, Democratization in the Modern World, From Empire to Nation-State: Turkish Modernity in Comparative Perspective, Political Ideologies in Turkey, Selected Issues in Private International Law, International Criminal Law, Reading and Research in the Middle East, Critical IR Theories, Independent Studies in International Relations, Post Cold-War Politics since 1990, Major Issues in the EU Law, International Environmental Law. c. Other Features of the Program; ca. Elective courses inside/outside the department: There are no elective courses offered outside the department. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods of every course are defined in Course Syllabuses which are prepared by the lecturer/s and included in the information package. Related articles of DEU Post Graduate Education and Exam Regulations and Social Sciences Institute Codes of Practice are implemented for exams and course final grades.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (87 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
