Course Objective

To give students necessary knowledge, with the purpose of achieving conscious and rational performance, to understand chord structures, cadences, chord connections and their functions within musical phrases in the works of Baroque, Classical and Romantic era.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Modulation; analyze variety of methods and rules regarding modulation.
2   Perform modulation in various keys through pivot chords.
3   Harmonize figured bass with modulation using chords in root position, first and second inversion.
4   Compose harmonic sequences with or without modulation.

Course Contents

1 Harmonization of the given figured bass or soprano in various keys with root position, first inversion and second inversion chords.
2 Modulation: Study and explanation of various methods, rules and examples of modulation.
3 Modulation through pivot chord; exercises.
4 Harmonization of the given figured bass with modulation (12-26 measures of lenght) using root position, first inversion and second inversion chords. Exercises by Prof. Sayram Akdil: No 1 and No 2

Lectures
In-class lectures are carried out through the harmonic examples written on the music staff board by the instructor and through varied and individual realizations of students.

Homework Assignments
Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

EXAMS: A midterm exam will be held at the end of the semester; a student will earn 60% of his/her grade through this exam. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.

Written exam and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
